What Sachem Football Is All About

Respect.

It’s always good to give respect, however, getting respect is the reason you play. The reason you sweat. The reason you bleed for this game. Think about that. Bleeding for a game. Some say the love felt for this game is literally indescribable. The mere thought of it is confusing in itself, you find yourself searching for words to express your feeling for it, but it’s just that: a feeling.

The respect you work so hard for can come from many places. You struggle for respect from your coach, respect from your parents, respect from your teammates and respect from yourself. The last may be the hardest to earn. Often times we are the hardest on ourselves. So many people are counting on you, but when it’s all said and done, if they asked you to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, you feel you could do it.

The long days, longer practices and the eternal struggle to balance athletics and academics sometimes seem to never end. You’re in a dark cave with a blindfold on; there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Press on, or fold. All the days of hard work, all the lesson’s learned. This is an easy choice. As a matter of fact, it’s not a choice at all. It was never a choice. Press on.

The lessons learned apply to so much more than just football. These are carried with you for the rest of you’re days. This is the time you become the person you’re going to be for the rest of your life. There will be stumbles along the way, everyone has them. Yet you now have the knowledge and resources to identify theses stumbles and overcome them. Those are the things that transcend football.

You feel blessed you have this knowledge. The quiet confidence that comes with it. People can see it in you. It affects everything about your life. Words like responsibility, loyalty, compassion. These words actually mean something to you.

On the hottest day, suffering through the worst practice, on the eve of the biggest game, preparing for the biggest exam, you don’t worry. A cool smile comes over your face. You’re ready. You’re prepared. For whatever comes your way. Bring it.

Respect.
