Sachem improves to 7-0 with win over Connetquot

Sachem running back Davon Lawrence is tough to prepare for. Give him room and he's gone. Don't give him room, he'll make some and then he's gone.

Lawrence, a senior running back, ran for touchdowns of 70 and 50 yards in the first half as Sachem North routed defending Long Island champion Connetquot, 35-7, Friday on senior night in Lake Ronkonkoma in Suffolk Division I football.

With Connetquot leading 7-0 early in the second quarter, Sachem North took over at its own 26. Two plays later, Lawrence dashed forward, cut back into the secondary and raced 70 yards for a touchdown.

On Sachem North's next possession, Lawrence raced 50 yards untouched on the first play of the drive to put the Flaming Arrows up for good 13-7.

The score remained the same until the fourth quarter, when quarterback Angelo Armine capped an eight-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Connetquot went three-and-out on the next drive, but the punter bobbled the snap. Ryan Grasman hit the punter, allowing Andrew Mellini to pick up the loose ball to give Sachem North (7-0) first-and-10 at Connetquot's 16.

Jesse Scanna ran for a 16-yard touchdown on the next play to make it 28-7. Sachem North's Ryan Gerandel ran back a 54-yard interception to the Connetquot 2 on the next drive, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Armine to complete the scoring.

Connetquot went up 7-0 in the second quarter when Ryan Andersen connected with Matt Nason in the corner of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

Connetquot could have led earlier when Mike Pellegrino appeared to be down at the Sachem North 1, but he lost control of the ball and it was ruled a fumble and Sachem North recovered it in the end zone for a touchback.
