Posted Wednesday, June 09, 2010 by Sachempatch.com

Downstate beat Upstate, 36-7, in the first New York State High School Football Classic held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Participating in the event was Sachem High School North head football coach Dave Falco, who was responsible for the defense, as well as his assistants Dave Caputo and Joe Cannone. Sachem athletic trainer Mike Wulforst was also on the sidelines.

"It was a great experience for our kids as well as our coaches and trainer," said Falco. "Any time you can associate yourself with the best of the best it's going to be a  great opportunity and learning experience for all of us. I am also very proud of the way the Sachem players and coaches handled themselves during the couple of days of preparation and at the game on Sunday they represented the Sachem Community very well."

"This was a great game to highlight New York State football,"added Caputo. "It was a first class event that will continue to grow, helping to put football in this state on the map.  The Sachem football program will help to lead this initiative for many years to come.  We want our program to be recognized as one of the top in the state and this was a great opportunity to showcase it."

North seniors Davon Lawrence and Joe Kirchner played in the game.

Downstate led 9-0 at halftime and increased the scoring gap 19-0 by the time the fourth quarter rolled around. With two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the final quarter, the game was out of reach for the the Upstate team. Lawrence recorded five tackles in the game, while Kirchner recorded three.

"We had a great experience in Syracuse," Lawrence said. "It was awesome to have our coaches work with us one more time before we go on to college next year."

"If felt like a Sachem game with all of our coaches on the sideline and Mike the trainer with us too," added Kirchner.

The Classic game and weekend stand as the pinnacle for high school football in New York State, and a rallying point for the New York High School Football Coaches Association, according to a statement by the NYSHSFCA. The New York State High School Football Classic was established following the dissolution of the New York – New Jersey All Star Football Classic (formerly The Governors Bowl).
