Week 3 Preview: Sachem North at Brentwood

Flaming Arrows take first road trip to battle Indians.

It was this time last season when Sachem took a slight stumble, playing a less than spectacular first half against Longwood and narrowly escaping with a victory.

Sachem North head coach Dave Falco said he and the team have worked this week on maintaining the status quo and playing like the top ranked team in Suffolk County.

"I think Brentwood is going to be a well-coached team," he said. "They always have athletes."

Sachem heads into Week 3 with a 2-0 record and big wins over Patchogue-Medford and Lindenhurst under its belt. At 1-1, Brentwood is certainly not the team it was last season, having lost multiple weapons to graduation.

Both games last season had historic values. In the regular season, Sachem won, 42-41, making for the highest combined points (83) in a game in program history. The playoff game, a 42-6 Sachem win, saw the most points the Arrows ever put up in the post-season.

Match-up: Sachem North (2-0) vs. Brentwood (1-1)

Division: I

Venue: Brentwood High School

Game time: 1:30 p.m.

In-game battles: Brentwood has been streaky. Granted, it has only played two games, but in Week 1 against Whitman quarterback Jordan Williams was 4-of-9 passing for 85 yards and three touchdowns. Last week in a loss against Connetquot, he was 1-for-12. The player to watch is running back Chris Green, who totaled 98 yards on 19 carries last week and 75 yards on nine carries in the season opener.

As for Sachem, now that Michael Andreassi, Jesse Scanna, Michael McCarthy and Dalton Crossan have all begun to find a groove, it'll be interesting to see which one steps up in the team's first road game. As always, don't expect much passing.

Interesting facts

  • Sachem is 29-15-1 all-time against Brentwood. Their playing history dates back to 1972 when Brentwood opened the rivalry with a 35-6 win. For a stretch from 1973-1979, Sachem played both Brentwood Ross and Brentwood Sonderling during the regular season.
  • Sachem has outscored Brentwood 907-721, all-time.
  • Sachem is 27-18-4 all-time in Week 3 games. It is 5-5 in its last 10 games on that week of the season.
  • Each year the game between Sachem and Brentwood is played in honor of Spider Westervelt, Sachem's former game day announcer for over 30 years. He passed away in 1995 and the press box is named in his honor at Sachem. "It was like having Bob Sheppard," Falco said. "I'll always remember him saying, 'standing in the North end zone.' He's always going to be remembered."

What's next: Sachem travels to Connetquot for a Week 4 game at 1:30 on Saturday, Oct. 2.

*After the game there will be a game story, photo gallery, video highlight and Friday there will be the "This Week in Sachem Football" column
