Week 5 Preview: Sachem at Northport

North focused on trap game before Floyd in Week 6.

By now the entire coaching staff and team at Sachem North understands the task at hand: to beat Northport, then worry about William Floyd.

On the other side of the coin, however, Floyd may be overlooking Longwood this week and could lose for the first time this season. Stay tuned for updates on that game.

Northport's only win was a 32-27 victory over lowly Bay Shore in Week 3. Last week the Tigers lost, 27-14, to Longwood, who rushed for almost 300 yards in the game.

Sachem, on the other hand, demolished Connetquot, 45-0, and made a statement, rushing and passing at will against a Thunderbird squad rumored to potentially give the Arrows a moderate threat. That didn't happen. Instead, Sachem executed in every facet of the game and made noise, scoring 45-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time in program history.

"If we focus on Floyd and we don't take care of business here, Northport has the ability to beat us," said Sachem coach Dave Falco. "If you're not on your game, they can score points. We are one game at a time, one play at a time, playing hard and smart together. The kids have listened to that."

Match-up: Division I, Sachem North (4-0) at Northport (1-3)

Venue: Northport High School

Game time: Oct. 8, 7 p.m.

In-game battles: Sachem will focus on stopping quarterback John Laurine, who passed for 192 yards in Northport's only win of the season. He can scramble as well. Running back Jesse Ferraro is a threat and scored four touchdowns against Bay Shore. Northport runs a Wing-T offense with motion and options.

As for Sachem's weapons ... well, there are too many for Northport to contain. We'll see which major player steps up and grabs the limelight Friday.

Interesting facts

  • Sachem is 14-3-2 all-time against Northport. Their first meeting was in 1977, and resulted in the biggest win in Sachem's history, a 55-0 drubbing. The Arrows went on to win the Rutger's Trophy that year. Northport did not win a game against Sachem until 1991.
  • The teams last met in 2007, a 39-27 Northport win.
  • Sachem leads in all-time scoring against the Tigers, 470-230.
  • In Week 5 games, Sachem is 27-22.

What's next: Sachem hosts William Floyd for a showdown of the ages Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
