This Week in Sachem Football: Week 5

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week I'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football program at Sachem as the season progresses, the numbers and statistics become more and more interesting, but here's the information from Week 5:

Sachem 28, Northport 7

-Sachem has started a season off 5-0 only six other times since the program began (49 seasons). This is the second consecutive season to accomplish this feat.

-Dating back to the final game of the 2008 season, North has won 16 of its last 17 games.

-Sachem has scored 189 points this season. The Arrows are quickly approaching historical numbers. In order for the 2010 team to crack the top 10 list in program history it'll need to pass the 1978 and 1983 teams, which both scored 222 points.

-Sachem head coach Dave Falco was a member of the 1983 team, which also began its season 5-0.

-Sachem is 15-3-2 all-time against Northport. Their first meeting was in 1977, and resulted in the biggest win in Sachem's history, a 55-0 drubbing. The Arrows went on to win the Rutger's Trophy that year and Brian Dehler won the Hansen Award. Northport did not win a game against Sachem until 1991.

-Of the 15 wins, Sachem has scored 28 or more points against Northport six times.

-The teams last met in 2007, a 39-27 Northport win.

-Sachem leads in all-time scoring against the Tigers, 498-237.

-In Week 5 games, Sachem is 28-22.

-In his first eight seasons as head coach, Fred Fusaro's record was 32-32-1, while Falco sports a 38-29 mark.

-Sachem is the only undefeated team in Division I. The other Suffolk County schools without a loss: Division II - Newfield, Division III - Sayville and Isilip, Division IV - Glenn, which is coached by Sachem alum Dave Shanahan and assistant Fred Fusaro. Nassau's undefeated schools: Oceanside, Carey, Lynbrook, Hewlett, Seaford and Roosevelt.

-The Andreassi File: With his 16 carries and 79 yards against Northport, he moved into 11th on Sachem's career rushing list. He has 1,353 yards on 213 career carries and 15 touchdowns. He passed Vin Clark (1,296) and Paul Torregrosa (1,339) Friday night. Next up: Jason Kling (1,367) and Walter Carey (1,539).

-The Scanna File: For his four-year career at Sachem, he has 132 carries, 1,141 yards and 12 touchdowns. Scanna is now the 13th all-time leading rusher in Sachem history. Clark's 1,296 yards are next in sight.
