Flaming Arrows celebrate tradition,
tie program points record.

On a night where legends from the past were in attendance to honor the 25th anniversary of Sachem's 1986 Rutgers Trophy championship team, the Flaming Arrows made history again.

Sachem beat Brentwood, 56-14, Friday night at Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium, tying a program-record for points scored in a single game (previous 56 was scored against Central Islip in 2007).

The win propels the Flaming Arrows to 6-1 in the regular season, while Brentwood falls to 2-4.

"It’s a great bounce-back game for us," said Sachem coach Dave Falco, referring to last week's loss at William Floyd. "We did a great job preparing. Our big time players really stepped up and became leaders this week in practice. That’s what this team needed."

"Losing that opened our eyes and made us realize we have to practice harder," said Sachem senior Dalton Crossan. "I think we did just that and came out ready to go."

The game also was the setting for this week's Great American Rivalry Series presented by the United States Marines. Sachem was awarded a trophy and championship hats after the victory. Crossan, who rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, and also had one touchdown reception for 32 yards, was named Game MVP.

He was joined by a handful of underclassmen who have shown tremendous promise this season. Sophomore Malik Pierre scored on both of his carries, adding touchdowns of 59 and 77 yards under his belt for 136 yards. Junior Tyler Andreassi had 4 carries for 52 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Anthony DiMatteo is only the fifth freshman in school history to play varsity football. He has been strong at the guard position. Sophomore lineman Bryan Gresalfi also has made a name for himself in recent weeks.

"We have a lot of talent, especially young talent," said Crossan. "Now they’re getting more comfortable, getting more varsity games under their belt and they’re coming to play."

Sachem led 35-0 at halftime and received work from multiple players in the backfield, including Kevin Lathan, who had a speedy fourth quarter, converting on a couple of 10-plus yard carries. Mike O'Donnell threw his second touchdown pass of the season when he hit Crossan with a 32-yard pass with three minutes left in the first half.

Dwayne Scott scored two touchdowns for Brentwood.

Next week Sachem travels to Lindenhurst on Friday where the Flaming Arrows will look to clinch their third straight Division I regular season title.
