The nerves are usually there. The adrenaline, the anticipation, the tension.

A little extra excitement before opening night is to be expected.

But tonight, the electricity should reach a new level.

Sachem North hosts Sachem East at 7 p.m., marking the first time the two schools have met in football.

"You try to look at it as another game and minimize distractions, but I'd be naive to say there won't be added pressure and intensity," Sachem North coach David Falco said. "Everyone is talking about this game -the students, the teachers, the guys in town. It should be a great new tradition."

Other than an opening day win, the teams will be playing for bragging rights and a new 50-inch wooden statue of Chief Sachem, which will be displayed in the winning team's school for the upcoming year.

Sachem North, the sixth seed in Division I, will likely look to move the ball through the air. Falco said both of his junior quarterbacks, Steven Cook and Nick Guidi, will see time, and will have as many as five receiving options.

For No. 4 Sachem East, expect to see senior running back Matt Ferber all night. He rushed for 856 yards last year while splitting time with John Carberry, who graduated. John Sacco enters his second year as East's starting quarterback.

"Everyone wants to win the first one of a new rivalry," Sachem East coach Al Bertolone said. "This particular group can do some good things and have big goals. They want to get Sachem East into the playoff hunt."
